Working from home has its perks, but it can also be a productivity killer if you don’t have the right set-up. Creating a home office environment that truly boosts your productivity is key if you are going to be working from home a lot, especially now that WFH at least for part of the week has become the workplace norm. By taking the time to create a well-designed office space, you can improve your focus work, become more organised, and increase your productivity long-term.  Here are a few tips to get you started.

1. Declutter Your Workspace

Give your workspace a real make-over! A cluttered and disorganised workspace can be a major source of distraction.

A simple yet effective method, gather up all of your items and decide which ones to keep, which ones to stow away, and which ones to throw out. Only keep what you truly feel is most important and brings you happiness (Marie Kondo style!), and get rid of any items that are distracting. By decluttering, you can create a clean and organised workspace that will help you stay focused and in control and be more productive.

2. The Importance of Lighting

Lighting is everything! It plays a key role in creating a work environment that feels comfortable and increases productivity.

Poor lighting can easily lead to headaches and eye strain, while good lighting can improve your mood and increase your focus. Make sure to get enough natural light throughout your entire office space as that helps to regulate your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle. If natural light is unavailable, or you are working at night, consider investing in some good quality ambient lights to create a softer environment.

3. Streamline Your Goals

Set some personal and professional goals. Having a clear sense of purpose and direction will help you to feel more motivated and disciplined, which is essential when you’re working from home, removed from managers and co-workers!

Make sure your goals are manageable, and keep a list, goal board, or reminder to hand at your workstation for that daily dose of motivation.

4. Comfort Above All Else

Make yourself at home. Working from home doesn’t have to mean working in an uncomfortable or uninspiring environment.

When you are comfortable, you are more likely to be focused on your work and tick off those tasks. Make comfort a priority by keeping your home office at a comfortable temperature and investing in a chair that supports your back.

Remember you’ll be there for hours each day, so it’s really worth creating an environment that is comfortable and enjoyable to work in.

5.Take Breaks

Taking breaks is essential for your productivity. Sitting at the same desk for hours on end can be draining, but regular breaks help to reduce the inevitable fatigue and increase focus.

Whenever you take a break, you are giving yourself a chance to rest and recharge. Short breaks should be taken at regular intervals, ideally every hour or so, and be used to do something that is mentally and physically stimulating and relaxing.
